چکیده

Using standard parasitological, pathological, haematological and sero-biochemical methods, the trypanocidal effect of quinapyramine sulphate/chloride and melarsoprol has been compared in rats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma evansi isolated from a camel. The results indicated that infection in all rats resulted in fulminating parasitaemia (> 10 trypanosomes per mL). One week after treatment, no parasitaemia was detected at necropsy in quinapyramine-treated rats but it was evident at a range of (5×10 to 5×10) in the positive control rats and in the melarsoprol-treated rats. Treatment with both drugs did not significantly influence the infection-induced changes in the PCV. The activities of ASAT and AP were significantly increased in groups II, III and IV. Treatment with melarsoprol insignificantly increased the concentration of urea in serum. There were no consistent differences in the overall histopathological pictures of the vital organs of infected and untreated rats as well as those treated with either drug following infection. It was concluded that, at the doses used, quinapyramine was effective in treating the strain of T. evansi used in this work while melarsoprol was not.

Surra is an animal pathogenic protozoan infection, caused by Trypanosoma evansi, that develops into a fatal wasting disease. Control measures rely on diagnosis and treatment. However, with the continuous emergence of drug resistance, this tactic is failing, and the pressing need for new chemotherapeutic agents is becoming critical. With the introduction of novel aromatic diamidines, a new categ...

Efficacy of repeated doses of diminazene aceturate (Dinazene®) in the treatment of experimental Trypanosoma brucei infection of Albino rats

The efficacy of repeated doses of Dinazene® in Albino rats experimentally infected with Trypanosoma brucei (Gboko strain) was investigated. A total of 30 adult female Albino rats weighing 130-190 g were used for the study. They were assigned to six groups (groups A-F) of five rats each. Groups A-D were infected intraperitoneally with 1.0 × 106 trypanosomes in 400 μL of PBS diluted blood while g...

"Mal de Cadeiras", an enzootic disease caused by Trypanosoma evansi, is one of the most important trypanosomiases in the Brazilian Pantanal region. The disease affects mainly horses, which are widely used in extensive cattle production, an activity of greatest economical significance for the region. The parasite also infects sylvan (coatis and capybaras) and domestic (dogs) animals, respectivel...

Evaluation of a short-term in vitro growth-inhibition test to determine susceptibility of Trypanosoma vivax stocks to various trypanocides.

Two Trypanosoma vivax stocks were initiated in culture with tsetse or culture-derived metacyclics. They were propagated axenically as bloodstream trypomastigotes at 35 degrees C in 4% CO2 in air. Populations of trypanosomes were incubated with various concentrations of antitrypanosomal compounds, namely diminazene aceturate, quinapyramine sulphate, DL-alpha-difluoromethylornithine, isometamidiu...
